A rational and efficient system of ex situ conservation needs to ensure that priorities are scientifically sound and activities are financially sustainable.
Starting in 2005, the Crop Trust began to coordinate the development of strategies that consider the global circumstances of several important crops, to act as “roadmaps toward an efficient and effective global system” (Khoury, Laliberté & Guarino 2009).
Each crop strategy is unique and independent and was developed with the input of a community of experts in the assigned crop. All reflect the prevailing consensus on the conservation and research priorities for that crop. The strategies will continue to evolve and be updated.
